Emergency Medical Services [EMS] is a dynamic, fast-paced profession that allows individuals to make a profound difference in the lives of those in need. Those employed in the profession are autonomous practitioners working to provide high-caliber care to patients utilizing protocols and standing orders under the direction of a Medical Director
In Missouri, there are multiple levels of EMS practitioners, the most common of which are Emergency Medical Technician [EMT] and Paramedic. To ensure we consistently provide the highest level of care to our community, SCCAD’s Surge and Emergency Divisions are staffed exclusively by paramedic-level clinicians.

Work Schedule
SCCAD’s Emergency Division has a three-platoon system (A, B, and C). Full-time emergency division employees work a 48/96 schedule, meaning that paramedics work for two consecutive 24-hour shifts, and are then off for 96 hours (four days). Shift change occurs at 7:30 a.m. Due to the unique nature of this scheduling, SCCAD paramedics work approximately 900 more hours annually than someone who works a traditional 40-hour week.
Paramedics on the District’s Surge Division (Platoons D, E, and F) are responsible for the majority of interfacility transfers and work a Kelly Schedule. This setup of hours is somewhat unique to first responder agencies and operate based on three 24 hour shifts with 24 hour off days between each, followed by four days off. For instance, a paramedic may work Monday, Wednesday and Friday of a given week, then be off Saturday through Tuesday. The next rotation’s work days would be Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Like their counterparts on A, B and C platoons, paramedics working the Kelly Schedule work more hours annually than an individual working 40 hours per week.
All paramedics begin their SCCAD career on the Platoon D, E, or F, then move to the Emergency Division when openings occur.

Entry-level Surge Division paramedics earn approximately $84,756 in their first year on the job. Pay increases occur annually based on a four-year step program. This number is not inclusive of benefits or possible overtime opportunities.
