St. Charles County Ambulance District’s Substance Use Recovery Response Team [SURRT] is a unique approach to treatment referral that debuted in 2017 and later was named Community Impact Program of the Year by the American Ambulance Association.
For six years after the program’s debut, Paramedics engaged patients in the difficult conversation surrounding their need for substance use treatment and encouraged the patient to consent to participation in SCCAD’s Overdose Referral Program. If the patient agreed, a Paramedic trained in addiction counseling followed up with the patient within 24-48 hours and facilitate communication and entry into one of the many treatment programs available to them. Key to the success of this initiative were partnerships with dozens of mental health agencies that specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders [SUD].
In 2023, SCCAD was awarded a $1.5M grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA] to substantially enhance SURRT program services. Today, the District’s Mobile Integrated Health Team is able to initiate medication-assisted treatment immediately following revival if the patient consents to treatment. Treatment referral services continue to be offered thanks to an array of partnerships with mental health agencies.
Public Narcan
Thanks to federal grant funding, SCCAD Paramedics can provide any resident of St. Charles County with two free doses of Narcan to keep at home. The program is intended to save lives by providing families who have a loved one struggling with substance use disorder the ability to administer life-saving treatment immediately upon recognition of an overdose.
In order to receive the Narcan, individuals must complete a short training course on how to properly administer the medication in the event of an overdose. To learn more, please call 636.344.7600.
Prevention Programs
SCCAD takes an active role in the fight against substance use disorder in our community. Paramedics and our leadership team offer free presentations on the dangers of opioids for groups of all sizes and ages. Presentations include up-to-date overdose/death statistics, prevention tips, and a powerful video showcasing an opioid overdose call through the eyes of SCCAD Paramedics.
To arrange this presentation for your civic organization, church group, homeowners’ association or other group, please use our presentation request form.
