Having first aid kits on hand in your home and vehicle is a great way to make sure you’re quickly able to take care of scrapes, cuts, stings, and other minor issues that can happen anytime.
Many manufactures make “pre-built” first aid kits that contain many of the supplies you need for everyday emergencies. You may also opt to build your own kit tailored to meet the needs of your family or the activity at hand. For instance, some families create a kit specific to activities like camping, bike riding, etc.
Generally, a basic first aid kit should ideally contain the following supplies:
- Adhesive tape
- Alcohol wipes
- Antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin)
- Antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
- Antiseptic wipes
- Bandages of varying size
- Blanket
- Calamine lotion
- Cold packs (disposable instant type)
- CPR pocket mask
- Elastic bandage (like an Ace wrap)
- First Aid manual
- Gauze Pads of varying size
- Gloves (non-latex)
- Pain relievers (acetaminophen and ibuprofen)
- Roller gauze
- Scissors
- Splint
- Thermometer
- Tweezers
Keep in mind that many medical supplies do have expiration dates, so remember to check your kit occasionally. Also, be sure to replace supplies when used to ensure the kit is fully stocked for the next emergency.
